Mission to Mars - Getting There

OPENING QUESTIONS: How long will it take to get to Mars?

Why is that kind of a trick question?

OBJECTIVE:  I will work with my team to evaluate the internal structure of a rocket to Mars during today's class.

WORD FOR TODAY:

NASA is particularly interested in the mental, emotional and physical strains experienced by a small group of people forced to share a confined space under difficult conditions?

Work with your team to suggest how NASA might test humans in such a situation.

Now let's take a gander at the HI Seas Mission

There's some interesting articles out there about the subject of relationships in space. Apparently there was a simulated mission in which 130 (or so) folks were isolated in a project in Arizona. Apparently there was a couple that came aboard (it was all volunteer so no testing was done).

When their relationship started to come apart it had a profound impact on the *entire* crew.

Another article suggested that rigorous psychological testing is needed to focus on selecting folks who tend to be very easy going, fine with working in clutter and tended towards being introverted.

Do you agree? Please discuss with your team!

SpaceX is *determined* to send a "Starship" to Mars (It is hardly that since it will take something like 8 or 9 months to get to a planet that is "only" a few dozen million miles away while the nearest star is (truly) millions of times farther than that!)

SpaceX has not released any actual design specifications for the living/working/cargo etc... space inside that rocket.

That hasn't stopped folks from speculating. Please work with your team to find a DETAILED sketch/simulation that you think has the best chance for success in keeping humans safe, sane and emotionally and physically fit on the long voyage to Mars.

Oh by the way, some estimates suggest SpaceX will send as many as 100 crew members to Mars on one rocket. As you're looking through your rocket designs, work with your group to suggest an appropriately sized crew (you can choose any number you like!)

When you find an interesting sketch, please share it with the class HERE

Think about a time when you were sick, feeling really crummy and all you want to do is sleep.

Now imagine you are in Space! ICK!

Now please determine with your team how to divide up THIS interesting article about getting sick in space.
